The NHS has recently confirmed new funding boosts for Primary Care, and it is big news for both locums and practices.
From April 2025, an extra £2.4 billion a year is being channelled into Primary Care Networks (PCNs), aimed at growing the workforce, easing GP workloads, and improving patient access. The main focus is on hiring more staff through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS), meaning more funding for ANPs, ECPs, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, and other allied health professionals.
What this means for practices:
- More budget to hire: There will be extra funding to bring in high-quality locum cover quickly.
- Flexibility matters: Practices can use locums to plug gaps without putting pressure on their core budgets.
- Simplified hiring: Processes are being streamlined to help PCNs recruit faster.
What this means for locums:
- More opportunities: Demand for flexible, experienced clinicians is rising fast.
- Stronger rates: Increased budgets could lead to better pay packages.
- New types of roles: Fresh opportunities are emerging within PCNs, urgent care, and community services.
At Vela, we are already seeing the impact. More practices are reaching out, looking for top locums who can hit the ground running. If you are ready to take advantage of this shift, we are ready to help.
